Portrait Of Grissel, Lady Semple, Attributed To John Scougall

Oil on Canvas, attributed to John Scougall (1645-1730). Lady Semple (b.Sept. 19, 1661) daughter of Sir Archibald Primrose (Lord Carrington) & Agnes Gray. She married Francis, 8th Lord of Semple & later married Brig.-General Michael Cunningham in 1693. She died June,1723. She lived in Semple's Close, Edinburgh. Scougall lived nearby in Advocate's Close. He had also painted her father in 1676. The back is inscribed, "Lady Semple". The stretcher bears the label of "Doig, Wilson & Wheatley", Fine Art Dealers, etc.,90 George St. Edinburgh. She wears a jewelled earring, pearl necklace & a fashionable lace-trimmed & bejewelled gown. Painted in a feigned oval.
