"Scholar's Hat" Japanned Armchair
An Unusual & Beautifully Proportioned Chair Japanned with Iris Flowers on Meandering Tendrils. The panelled seat centres a green flowerhead, the corners with stylized bats in red. The yoke-shaped crest rail above a subtly tapered S-form splat. The stiles & arm supports all gently S-formed. The seat & rails supported with tapered flanges, as are the lower stretchers & footrail. The back of the chair also japanned, as are the underside & inside of the legs & stretchers. Probably to be seen by an audience seated on the floor in front of the sitter, perhaps elevated on a dais.
